Food and Drugs Control Laboratory

The National Food Laboratory

The National Food Laboratory operates under the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Zambia, providing laboratory analysis services for food and drugs in accordance with the Food and Drugs Act (Chapter 303) of the Laws of Zambia.

The laboratory serves as a Public Analyst facility under the Act, conducting examination and analysis of food and drug samples to protect the public against health hazards and fraud in the sale and use of food, drugs, cosmetics and medical devices.

Operating under the Food and Drugs Act

Food and Drugs Act (Chapter 303)

The Act provides for the protection of the public against health hazards and fraud in the sale and use of food, drugs, cosmetics and medical devices. Key provisions include:

  • Prohibition of sale of poisonous, unwholesome or adulterated food
  • Regulation of labelling and packaging of food products
  • Powers of authorized officers to take samples for analysis
  • Appointment of Public Analysts for laboratory examination
  • Prohibition of food not of the nature, substance or quality demanded
